What A Tourist Should Know About Washington DC

By: Andrew Gibson

Washington DC lies in the middle of the eastern seaboard of America and is nearly 90 miles from the Atlantic Ocean. It sits on the northern banks of the Potomac River and the city spreads across the side of the river up to the hills in the north.

Washington DC’s highest point is 390 feet above sea level in the Northwest of the city. Rock Creek is a tributary of the Potomac and it flows through the middle of the city running from north to south.

Spring is the most popular season for tourists to visit Washington DC as it has mild temperatures. The cherry trees also blossom at this time of the year and many tourists come especially to see this spectacular site. It is estimated that over twenty million visitors a year visit this world famous city.

Due to the ever growing number of tourists, there has been a growth in the number of holiday homes available for rental direct from their owners. Many visitors now find that the concept of renting a holiday home is far more appealing than staying in an impersonal hotel. These holiday lets are ideal for families and enable them to sample the true culture of the local area.

In the summer it is hot and humid and can be quite tiring for the first time visitor who has a long list of attractions that they want to visit. In order to help overcome the hot weather, many attractions now operate for longer hours during the summer months.

In recent years Fall has become a popular time to visit the city. Temperatures are far more agreeable and there are not as many crowds as during the summer. Many visitors are stunned by the elegant beauty of the foliage dropping of the trees.

Winter months can be very unpredictable weather wise. Temperatures can fluctuate from the high 40s and then drop well below freezing. However sever snow storms do not occur very often.

The city itself is shaped like a diamond and is separated from Virginia by the Potomac. It covers an area of 67 square miles and is divided into four areas.

Most tourists come to Washington DC to visit the White House. It has been home to America’s First Families for over two centuries. Every year in the first week of December, the president carries out the lighting of the National Christmas Tree. Tourists flock to Washington DC for this event and during the rest of the month of December gather on the Ellipse.

The White House organises a series of public annual events which draw huge crowds each year. A popular event is the annual Easter Egg Roll which is held on the Monday after Easter on the White House lawn.

There are also guided tours of the famous gardens in April and October. Probably the most popular event is the Christmas candlelight tours that are held over three evenings in late December. All of these events are free and as a result are extremely popular. It is advisable to get there well in advance to avoid disappointment.

With almost 4 million cubic feet of water falling over the crest line every minute and with a width of roughly 2,600 feet, they are truly breath taking.
The Awe-inspiring Niagara Falls

By: Sawhn Sultz

It is said that `seeing is believing’ and once you have a look at the Niagara Falls you will understand the truth behind this statement. You might have read a lot about this world famous waterfalls and might have even viewed images or videos featuring the same, but to understand the awe-inspiring beauty of this work of nature, one has to see it personally. The deafening sound of water falling through a great height, the spray of mist on your face, the colorful rainbows that are formed from time to time make Niagara Falls stand in a different league altogether.

It was during the 1820’s that this beauty of nature was introduced to the tourism industry in a big way and in a short span of 50 years the number of visitors to this scenic site had increased by ten times making it the most popular tourist venue. Nowadays more than 12 million tourists visit these falls per year to admire its beauty. Even Hollywood has been bowled over by the grandeur of these falls and movies like `Superman II’ and `Niagara’ have been filmed over here.

With the construction of the Whirlpool Bridge, the Lewiston-Queenston Bridge and the Rainbow Bridge more and more people are being able to access Niagara Falls. The best time to visit these falls are during the summer season though there are some people who testify that visiting the same during winter is an amazing experience. When the tourist season is at its peak, floodlights from the Canadian side illuminate the Niagara Falls for several hours after darkness has set in and this enhances the exquisiteness of this beauty of nature.

Located to the North of Western US border, this natural waterfall is composed of three different waterfalls, the Bridal Veil Falls, the Horseshoe Falls and the American falls. Together they pour approximately 5 million cubic feet of water per minute. Apart from being a world-renowned tourist spot, the Niagara Falls is used for other useful purposes too. The flow of water from these falls is harnessed and used to generate hydroelectric power, which is shared, by 3 cities close to it. All these three cities are named after the falls and two are located in the New York area and one in the city of Ontario in Canada.

Visitors to the Niagara Falls can enjoy its scenic beauty from either the Canadian or the US side and to facilitate them, special sitting arrangements have been provided. The height of the falls is lower on the US side, being 70 feet as compared with the height of 170 feet at the Canadian side. Those who have witnessed the grandeur of the falls agree in unison that it is a lifetime experience that can never be forgotten Those who do not have faith in the power of Mother Nature are recommended to go and spend some time in front of Niagara Falls to have a first hand experience of the spectacular beauty crafted by her.

Visit Paris For An Enchanting Weekend

By: T Stevens

If you never have, It’s time to book a hotel in Paris, Lets help you to decide what to do on those short few days which will always be memorable for you.

Since Paris is such a magical city, you can just wander around on its majestic streets, listening to your senses urging you to go into a pretty little cafe around a corner and have a slice of delicious tarte citron meringuée, or leaf through old pages with engraved illustrations in an antique book shop. Just sit down in a park under a hundred years old sycamore and enjoy the gentle warmth of the autumn sun and the yellow leaves swirling around in the wind.

But if you want to visit all those sight’s of Paris you’ve always heard about, you need a plan, a map and an underground pass. The metro is a very cheap and convenient way to travel in Paris: it gets you anywhere in no time. With its aid you can get from your hotel to the Eiffel Tower (you know, for pictures), but if you’re only there for a weekend, don’t waste two hours waiting in line to get on the elevator.

For a breathtaking view on the city, visit the Montmartre at dusk, with the beautiful white Sacré-Cœur on top of it, colourful markets where local artists exhibit their paintings, and street musicians making this moment unforgettable.

A little cultural journey is very doable in Paris, but if you decide to visit a museum, it doesn’t have to be the Louvre, and not even a picture gallery. There is a much wider variety of museums to choose from, for everyone’s liking: the Musée de la Curiosité et la Magie, Musée de la Marine, Musée de la Mode et du Textile, Musée de la Publicité, Musée de l’Armée, Musée des Arts Décoratifs and even a Musée de l’Erotism, just to name a few.

And when you’re in Paris, you have to visit a street market, where you will find the most surprising little gifts with their own story to tell. Also, try out some freshly baked croissant with the local type of cheese, and be sure to have (what is certain to be) a delicious dinner at a little French restaurant, with dessert and wine and candle-light.

Make a plan, find the famous places, but after that make sure you have some time to just stroll along on the banks of the Seine, admire unknown buildings, go into bars and pubs where there are no tourists, and just let the atmosphere of the city allure you, fascinate you, overwhelm you. Breath in the night air of the streets, watch the lights appear on the horizon, feel the joy of being there, the shared joy of everyone who’s ever been to Paris, ever been in love, and ever been travelling.

About the Author

Paris such a charming city with so much more to offer than you hear about. Book a hotel in Paris and enjoy everything here is to see.

I guarantee you will be checking your diary on the return trip home thinking about when you will visit Paris next and sulking about all the things that you didn’t manage to fit into your trip. Au-revoir et bon voyage for now.

Visit Hong Kong – Pearl Of The Orient

By: Wolfgang Jaegel

Hong Kong, also referred to as the ‘Pearl of the Orient,’ is perhaps the most popular tourist destination in the Southeast Asia. Until the arrival of the British in 1842, it was just a typical small village.

In 1997, Hong Kong was handed over to China, under the policy ‘one country, two systems.’ The city has now become one of the vibrant as well as s sought after destinations not only in Asia but also in the world.

Bordered by the South China Sea and Sea, Hong Kong, al though a part of China, is different from rest of China. With its own government, stamps, and laws and regulations, the city consists of four geographic areas, such as, the New Territories, Hong Kong Island, Kowloon Peninsula, and the Outlying Islands, all of them packed with a plethora of attractions and facilities.

It also consists of more than 200 islands, which consist of both small and tiny islands. In addition, Hong Kong is much famed for its superb deep water harbors. According to the survey conducted by the World Tourism Organization, the city has been ranked among the 15 most preferred tourist destinations in the world.

An incredible city blending the best from the East and West, Hong Kong’s attractions, among many others, are Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre with its unique curved three-tier roof and glass walls; the covered Central-Mid level Escalator, which is the longest in the world; and Hollywood Road, packed with a range of antique and curio shops selling Buddha statues, Japanese specialties like ikebana baskets, Chinese furniture, and snuff and perfume bottles.

Despite these attractions, perhaps the most famed attraction of the city is Victoria Peak, from whose summit you can gaze down to enjoy the wonderful vistas of skyscrapers and Victoria Harbor. During nights, the sights from the peak become more dazzling.

Also, of special significance are the temples of the region. Since Buddhism being the most popular religion of the place, Hong Kong has to its credit more than 400 temples, each of which is regarded as not to be a missed tourist attraction.

One of the most prominent Buddhist shrines is the Chi Lin Nunnery, located in Kowloon. Considered a living museum of the Tang Dynasty, it has been stunningly renovated in the traditional Tang-era architecture with several magnificent Buddhist halls. Another popular Buddhist shrine is Po Lin Monastery, whose focal point is a bronze statue of the Lord Buddha, which is the largest in the world. In addition to Buddhist shrines, the place also consists of several other popular shrines such as St John’s Cathedral, which is considered to be the oldest in the Far East and Shelley Street Mosque, which is noted for its minaret of green and white colors.

A visit to Hong Kong would be incomplete without taking a tour to many of its fascinating museums, showcasing unique art and antiquities representing several aspects of the place such as its history, film industry, space and science, and coastal defense. Some of the most visited museums in the region are Flagstaff House Museum of Tea Ware, Hong Kong Film Archive, Hong Kong Museum of Medical Sciences, Hong Kong Racing Museum, Hong Kong Planning and Infrastructure Exhibition Gallery, and Hong Kong Visual Arts Centre.

Attractions also include a continuum of beautiful beaches, including Repulse Bay, the most spectacular among the city’s beaches; Deep Water Bay, which is connected by a pathway to the Repulse Bay Beach; Turtle Cove, a tranquil beach; Golden Beach, the first artificial beach in Hong Kong; and Hung Shing Yeh – a marvelous beach on the Lamma Island.

Also, the gastronomy of the place is amazing, with specialized areas for enjoying remarkable delicacies, like, SoHo with a variety of restaurants serving international cuisine; Gage Street, dotted with an array of stalls, from where one can enjoy the best of Hong Kong style cuisines comprising noodles, soups, pastries, and herbal teas; and floating style restaurants found in Aberdeen.

Apart from this, excellent options are available for shopping, with areas like Lyndhurst Terrace packed with shops selling ancient paintings and maps; Stanley Street, considered a paradise for shopping cameras and film accessories; and Li Yuen Streets, dotted with shops selling knick-knacks, leather items, and casual wear.

With these fabulous attractions and options to enjoy a variety of activities, tourists flock to Hong Kong all year round. No matter you want budget or luxury accommodation, the city has options to cater to all types of tourists. Majority of the hotels and resorts are located within the heart of the city, and hence are within easy reach of almost all top tourist attractions.

Nowadays, many of the hotels, both budget and luxury accommodation, have their own sites on the web, which in turn enables the visitors to check price and room as well as make bookings in advance.

Travel India – Taj Mahal

By: Aashi Khattar

Taj Mahal, the monument of immeasurable beauty is one of the modern Seven Wonders of the World. It is considered one of the most beautiful buildings in the world and considered the finest example of Mughal architecture. The Mughal emperor Shah Jahan got this monument constructed in the memory of his wife, Mumtaz Mahal. The thoughts that come into the mind while watching the Taj Mahal of Agra is not just its phenomenal beauty, but the immense love which was the reason behind its construction. Standing majestically on the banks of River Yamuna, the Taj Mahal is synonymous with love and romance. The entire complex, with gardens, gateway structures, and mosque, was completed in 1653, which took almost 22 years to complete.

History of Taj Mahal
The Taj Mahal was built by the fifth Mughal emperor Shah Jahan in the memory of his beloved wife Mumtaz Mahal.she died while giving birth to their 14th child. It is believed that during her last moments, Mumtaz Mahal obtained a promise from Shah Jahan that he will build world’s most beautiful monument in her memory. Taj Mahal symbolizes eternal love of a man for his wife. The body of the queen was buried temporarily in the Zainabadi Garden in Burhanpur and moved to Agra after six months.

The land on which the Taj Mahal was built was acquired from Raja Jai Singh. The construction began in 1631 AD and completed in 22 years. 20,000 labors and artisans were employed for the work. The material for the mausoleum was brought from all over India and central Asia. Taj Mahal was designed by the Iranian architect Ustad Isa.

Soon after the Taj Mahal’s completion, Shah Jahan was deposed by his son Aurangzeb and put under house arrest at nearby Agra Fort. Upon Shah Jahan’s death, Aurangzeb buried him in the mausoluem next to his wife.

Architecture of Taj Mahal
Taj Mahal architecture is a kind of fusion of Persian, Central Asian and Islamic architecture. The Taj Mahal is situated 900 ft away from the entrance gate. The tomb is built over a marble plinth, which rests over a high sandstone base. And there are four tapering minarets on the four corners of the marble plinth flank the tomb. The minarets height is of 138 ft and is crowned by with eight windowed cupolas over the marble plinth.

The main building is built of marble and is square in plan with chamfered corners. Each side of the corner has an iwan adorned with calligraphy. There are small rectangular double arches one over the other on both sides of the iwan. The arched alcoves of equal sizes are semi-octagonal. The pilasters demark each section of the façade on both side, which rises from plinth of the tomb up to the frieze and are topped by beautiful pinnacles with lotus buds and finials. A shadowy burial crypt inside the Taj Mahal houses the tombs of Shah Jahan and his wife Mumtaz Mahal. Above these tombs is the main chamber that has the false tombs, typical of mausoleums of the Mughals. Perforated marble screens were used to transmit light into the central chamber.

Excursions from Taj Mahal

Delhi:
Delhi, known locally as Dilli several dynasties that have ruled from Delhi have left their marks all over the city. Today it is the capital of India and a metropolis bustling with activity. There are numerous tourist attractions in Delhi. The Red Fort, Qutb Minar, Humayun’s tomb, and the old fort are among the well known historic monuments of Delhi. The India gate, Raj path, Rashtrapati Bhawan, and the parliament house are the other famous landmarks of the city. Besides, you will also have a chance to visit the museums, mosques, temples, and famous markets of the city on a tour to Delhi from Agra. Many ethnic groups and cultures are represented in Delhi, making it a cosmopolitan city. The street food and the culture are also famous.delhi is also well known for its shopping.

Mathura:
Mathura is the birthplace of lord Krishna, one of the most popular Indian deities. It is located on the west bank of Yamuna River about 62 kms North West of Agra. Matura is famous for the Hindu heritage. The main attraction of this ancient city is the room inside the Sri Krishna Janmabhumi temple which is regarded as the exact birthplace of lord Krishna. The 25 ghats of Mathura are also among its chief attractions. These are the sites of the holy baths and the daily rituals of the Hindus. Besides being home to countless temples and Hindu religious spots, Mathura is also known for the magnificent Jami Masjid, and a roman catholic church, the church of the sacred heart. If some one is visiting Mathura, the government museum is an unavoidable spot. This place used to be a great center of Buddhism under the Kushanas. The famous headless statue of Kanishka is displayed in this museum.

Fiji Weather

The islands of Fiji enjoy a typical tropical climate throughout the year with high temperatures and humidity the norm. Fiji has, on average, around six to eight hours of sunshine a day with fairly consistent temperatures throughout the year. You would be very unlucky to experience more than a few hours of rain in a day even during the wet season, which runs from late December to mid March.
